In order to upload your field boundaries to your Soilmentor account, you'll first need to prepare a 'KML' file (a type of file that contains map information) using an external tool.

We recommend using Google Earth for this, by following these steps:

  1. Find your farm on Google Earth - search for your post code in the search bar to bring up the right area.

  2. Click 'New' on the left hand side menu bar → 'Local KML file' → 'Create'.

  3. Name the project with your farm name by clicking where it says ‘Untitled project’ at the top of the screen, and typing a new name.

  4. Click the button above the map with four dots joined by a line (Add path or polygon), and then click directly at the map on the corner of one of your fields to start drawing a shape. You can then continue clicking around the field until you join up the shape of your field.

The image below shows the shape of a field being drawn in Google Earth, with the ‘Add path or polygon’ button shown in blue in the top left corner.

  1. Once the shape is completed → click ‘Save to project’ → and name the shape with the exact naming you have used on Soilmentor for this field.

  2. Repeat steps 4 & 5 until you have mapped each of your Soilmentor fields in Google Earth, ensuring that each field name corresponds to the name of the field’s shape in Google Earth.

  3. When you are finished mapping, click the icon with the three dots on your project, and click ‘Export as Local KML file’.

  4. Now you have a KML file downloaded with a map of your farm! Next, head to the Soilmentor web app, and go to the Map area, and Add field boundaries in the top right.

In most cases (and based on the instructions above), you can leave the KML Field Identifier as Field Name, and then browse to attach the KML file you have just created.

  1. Click Upload and see your fields mapped on Soilmentor!

Once you’ve uploaded your field boundaries to Soilmentor, you can also change the colour of each field displayed on the map!

To do this, click the name of the field, go to ‘edit’, select your colour of choice, and then save!
